The Ca(I)re Programme - supporting carers in Edinburgh

Caire - putting the 'I' into careThe Ca(I)re (Putting the "I" into Care) programme helps carers in Edinburgh maintain their own good health and general wellbeing and enable them to fulfil their caring role. This is achieved through:

  • free educational, recreational and therapeutic courses.
  • an advice and information service.
  • Running a Carer Befriending service
  • Running the Lunch Breaks service for carers to attend with those they care for

The services offered address the needs of carers in a holistic manner by providing short breaks away from their caring responsibilities, peer support, emotional support, practical support, information, and educational & learning opportunities.

The purpose of these courses and events is to give carers the chance to remove themselves from their caring role for a few hours and simultaneously develop their individual skills and interests.

How Our Work Helps Carers

Ongoing evaluation has shown that carers who take part in the programme experience a marked improvement in their confidence and self esteem. Many carers have felt motivated to continue their learning beyond our courses and we have supported them into further education, training, employment or simply to continue the joy of learning for its own sake. Many carers have discovered new interests, taken up volunteering opportunities and become active members of the community. Carers who were at risk of mental ill health often found new energy and focus for their lives through the learning process that they committed to, sometimes in extreme personal circumstances. Due to the confidence building and empowering that the services have offered, some carers have described the programme as a "life line".

All our services are free and open to all carers and former carers (for up to 18 months after their caring role ended) living in Edinburgh.

Befriending Project

The Befriending service offers one to one support and aims to remove or lessen isolation experienced by carers and promote development of self confidence and self esteem.  Carers are matched up with volunteer befrienders who usually meet up once a week for a minimum of one hour.  What they do in that time depends on what the carer needs from the relationship, so this may involve joining in sports activities, going to an evening class, cinema or just sitting having a chat. Volunteers are trained and can offer support to carers during difficult times.

You can take a look at our new leaflet here!

The service is free to access but carers will need to consider budgeting for activity that they decide to undertake whilst with the befriender.  If you would like to find out more please contact Sally Sorrie on 0131 446 3317 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Lunch Breaks for Carers and their Cared for Person

You are warmly invited to join our Friday group from 1pm - 3pm, for a two course lunch followed by a programme of shared activities such as singing; gentle exercise such as dancing; games, quizzes or puzzles; or talks on topics relevant to caring situations. “Interesting,” “sociable,” “supportive,” and “relaxing,” are ways participants have described our ‘Day Breaks’ programme, which has now become ‘Lunch Breaks.’ Lunch Breaks are free but donations (up to £6 per head, per session, for lunches) would be welcome. We would love to have you join us! If you are interested in finding out more or would like to book a place, This email address is being protected from spambots.
